UNDERSTANDING THE COMMON CORE: KEY CONCEPTS FOR PARENTS
1. ENCOURAGING CRITICAL THINKING
The Common Core Standards emphasize critical thinking and deeper understanding. Students are encouraged to analyze information, explain their reasoning, participate in discussions, and support their answers through writing and problem-solving.
Parent Takeaway: Deep thinking can be challenging. Encourage your child to work through difficult concepts, ask questions, and explain their thought process.
2. INTEGRATING LEARNING ACROSS SUBJECTS
The Common Core promotes learning across multiple disciplines by connecting reading, writing, math, science, and social studies within real-world situations and collaborative activities.
Parent Takeaway: Problem-solving and teamwork are important life skills that students use both inside and outside the classroom.
3. DEMONSTRATING UNDERSTANDING THROUGH EVIDENCE
Today’s learning standards focus on students showing how they arrived at an answer rather than simply memorizing facts. Students are expected to explain, justify, and support their thinking using evidence and reasoning.
Parent Takeaway: Encourage your child to explain their answers and describe how they solved problems.
SUPPORTING COMMON CORE LEARNING AT HOME
Parents can support learning and critical thinking at home by:
- Encouraging children to explain their thoughts and decisions
- Asking open-ended questions that require more than “yes” or “no” answers
- Discussing everyday issues and brainstorming possible solutions together
- Comparing and contrasting ideas, objects, stories, or experiences
- Looking for patterns in daily life and routines
- Encouraging curiosity and meaningful conversations
- Helping children organize, describe, and categorize information
- Teaching the importance of values, responsibility, and respectful communication
- Celebrating independent thinking and positive opinions
Strong partnerships between home and school help students become confident, successful, and lifelong learners.
